I once paid a visit to a small town where where people didn’t lock up their cars or front doors. That’s a sure sign of a nice, close-knit community, the kind of place where everybody knows each other and nothing can happen without the whole town hearing about it. Some people see it as a luxury, but I say you can’t put a price on something as important as home security.

You may think that your home is safe because you are protected by your locks and your guard dog. But the fact is, while you will certainly repel some intruders, you may not be able to fend off a truly determined burglar. We are talking about the kind of professional thief that can pop a good lock in seconds. Why take the risk that you could lose valuable possessions or even hurt or in some way victimized in a home invasion? And in any case, it is always better to have a backup. Then if anything should go wrong, or some sort of emergency takes place, you have the assurance that your local security company is being alerted.

You should take a little time to do an inventory of your home and possessions. You may not have fully realized the number of valuable items you own that would be attractive to thieves. Things such as artwork, decor, furnishings, even collectible books and toys. After noting all of your valuables, walk around your home and, putting yourself in a burglar’s shoes, think about how someone might try to steal your stuff. What would it be like at night, especially? And if there was no one at home, would it be easy for a thief to break into your house? Look for unusual entryways and maybe even see if you can get into the house through them. Consider the weaknesses of such spots as balconies, glass sliding doors, or large windows. You may be surprised at how easy it would be to break into your home.

If you install an alarm system, your home will have protection whether you are there or not. You will be able to sleep securely at night or go on a trip without having to worry about leaving the house unguarded. Today’s digital home alarms are monitored by a security company, which will be alerted if the alarm is triggered by someone trying to break in. The company will swiftly inform the local police to send their officers to protect your home. If you are in the house, and the alarm is set off by an intruder, you have the security of knowing that the police will soon be on their way to help you. A home alarm is really worth the price you pay when you are getting better protection for your family and property.
